Candied Taro

Candied taro is one of Snow Flower’s and Lily’s favorite treats. Cubes of taro are fried until they are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The fried cubes of taro are then coated in melted sugar. The cubes are then dipped into a cold bowl of water, making the sugar hard. When eating this treat you experience “the crunch of the sugar shell, the crispiness of the fried taro, and then the final soft center” (Lisa See). In Guilin, this treat is called Candied Taro Fritters. In this dish, taro is coated with egg white and fecula. The taro is then deep fried to a golden tint and watered with liquid sugar (sugar candy, vinegar and water) (

Another version of the taro snack can be found in Wuxi. This famous and traditional snack is characterized by it’s amazing scent and sweet soup, pictured below.

Red Bean Dumplings

When a Chinese girl was about to begin her foot binding process, special red bean dumplings would be fed to her. This was thought to help the foot achieve a softness and size similar to the dumplings themselves (History of Footwear).



Congee (also called jook in Cantonese) is a type of Asian porridge, where the main ingredients consist of water and rice. Congee literally means “water in which rice has been boiled.” It’s existence dates back thousands of years in China. There is no sure time frame of when congee was first created, but there have been records of this dish existing ever since 221-207 B.C.

Congee is an integral part of Chinese food. It can be found everywhere and anywhere inside China. Many other Asian countries have taken congee and adapted it into their cultures as well. Korea, India, Philippines, and Japan are just some examples.

Baby Food Congee

The best part about Congee is that it is very simple to make and very simple to digest. It can be used as baby food, to soothe an upset stomach, to help an ill person, etc.
